SOP মানে Statement of Purpose।

Statement of Purpose
In this statement, I present my
undergraduate (UG) track record, which, I believe, is uniquely balanced between
the achievement of the highest academic credentials in the history of my
department, strong research and publication record in nanoelectronic device
modeling and leadership activities; and explain my motivation for applying to
the PhD program at Stanford University Electrical Engineering, which originates
from my strong research interest in CMOS and non-CMOS devices for next
generation electronics and Stanford’s leading role in this field.
Academic studies and research were
the two main focuses during my UG studies. I maintained a record GPA of
4.00/4.00 throughout my undergraduate studies, which is the highest CGPA in the
history of my department, and also the highest in my graduating class of almost
900 students combined in all departments of the university. Indeed, this is a
continuation of my earlier achievement of securing the 1st position in the
university entrance examination in 2004, which is considered to be the most
competitive exam of the country. My choice of a career in science is inspired
by my long-heralded interests in mathematics and physics since childhood and it
was my fascination for science-in-action for the benefit of the society that
inspired me to choose an engineering career. My UG involvement with IEEE
brought me the perspective of electrical engineering at the international
setting. From the touch with IEEE’s “Spectrum”, I started grasping the idea of
Moore’s law and the triumph of nanotechnology worldwide. This first instilled a
profound curiosity to discover the nature at nanoscale inside me. I embarked
into the journey by self-motivated study and small projects on computational
nanoelectronics from junior year.
In my undergraduate thesis, I
focused on MOSFET scaling issue and performed multidimensional quantum
simulations of capacitance and transport in multigate FETs. This work led our
group to get to a significant result that when the fin thickness is scaled down
deeply, increasing the number of gates does not significantly improve drive
current. Starting by developing a self-consistent electrostatic solver for
FinFET in the Comsol Multiphysics platform, the challenge was computational
complexity and heaviness of coupled solution of multidimensional Schrödinger
and Poisson equation. I addressed the challenge by taking the cross-section
along the direction perpendicular to the transport assuming equal bias at both
source and drain and thus reduced the computational burden. Taking fully-
depleted channel and square fin dimension into account, I used the solver to
calculate charge density in the channel of FinFET and its capacitance-voltage
(C-V) characteristics. This finding was reported in the IEEE Student Conference
on Research and Development held in Malaysia on November 2009 and our paper
received “IEEE Electron Device Society Best Paper Award”. After electrostatic
characterization of FinFET, I calculated transport properties in the ballistic
limit using “Top of the Barrier Approach”. I compared double gate and triple
gate FinFET with respect to ballistic current performance limit and arrived at
the aforementioned conclusion. This novel finding was reported in the 3rd IEEE
International NanoElectronics Conference held in Hong Kong on January 2010,
which was attended by dignitaries like Prof. Harold Kroto, Nobel laureate in
Chemistry, Prof. Karl K. Berggren, MIT, Prof. Paul Alivisatos, UC Berkley.
Having developed a background on
full-scale computational device modeling, I shifted my focus to compact
modeling of III-V MOSFETs. Performance of III-V MOSFETs, notable for its high
electron mobility, is heavily affected by the interface trap density. With
collaboration with Prof. Alam at Purdue University, I am currently leading a
team to develop a computational tool for extracting the density of interface
trap states (Dit) in InGaAs channel MOSFETs given its experimental C-V
characteristics. I am developing a compact model for semiconductor capacitance
(Cs) as a function of surface potential in InGaAs MOSFET with the purpose of
eliminating the use of self-consistent numerical simulation technique. It would
be computationally inexpensive and enable the VLSI designers to use this method
for Dit extraction. Already, I have modified a compact model for eigenenergy to
be applicable for this device and it has been reported to the 6th International
Conference on Electrical and Computer Engineering (ICECE) (to be held on
December, 2010). After the completion of this project, a manuscript will be
submitted to IEEE Transaction on Electron Devices. Also, the tool for Dit
extraction will be uploaded to nanoHUB when the compact modeling part will be
incorporated successfully.
Besides studies and research, I
was also involved in team efforts and leadership activities. I was the youngest
member of the BUET team in two international competitions, the
"International Future Energy Challenge (IFEC), 2007", which won the
“Outstanding Undergraduate Educational Impact Award” and the “IEEE Enterprise
Award” competition 2007. I prepared a detailed business plan on the context of
power crisis in Bangladesh to produce and market biofuel from Jatropha circus
(a species of locally abundant shrub) for the “HSBC Young Entrepreneurs Award
Competition, 2006-07”. I was the treasurer in the executive committee of IEEE
BUET student branch during ’06-’07. Currently, I am the secretary of IEEE
Electron Device Society Bangladesh Chapter and have successfully arranged
invited talk of Prof. Salahuddin from UC, Berkeley and distinguished lecture
program having Prof. Pinaki Majumder from University of Michigan-Ann Arbor as
the resource person. As a member in the organizing committee of 6th
International Conference on Electrical and Computer Engineering, I am acquiring
management and organizing skills. Now that I am a faculty member at BUET and
mentoring the 2011 IFEC team of BUET as a graduate student member, seeing my
students grasping the ideas conveyed by me, I am confident that I have the
innate ability to guide others and take leadership role.
Stanford is at the center stage
for revolution in electronics industry and I am particularly excited by the
diverse expertise and strength of Stanford in this field (experimental and
theoretical research in non-traditional electronics and optoelectronics,
optical interconnect, three dimensional device integration,
nanoelectromechanical devices and III-V FETs etc.). Hence I am strongly
motivated to work with Stanford nanoelectronics group (http://nano.stanford.edu/)
and Stanford photonics research center
(http://www.stanford.edu/group/dabmgroup/research.html) and particularly
interested in the work of Professor Saraswat, Miller, Wong, Nishi and Harris.
MOSFETs in III-V materials research by Prof. Saraswat interests me the most
because of my current research experiences in computational and theoretical
modeling of such devices. Prof. Saraswat’s research on spinFET from theoretical
point of view appeals me also because it has the proper blend of physics and
engineering that would suit me. The experimental work of Prof. Wong coupled
with modeling to improve contact technologies in III-V FETs interests me
because it has the potential of making end-of-the-roadmap CMOS devices a
reality. Also his research on nanoelectromechanical switches offers unique
advantages such as zero off-state leakage and energy-reversible operation for
low standby power and low dynamic power. Prof. Miller’s research on
photodetection by optical antennas interests me because it can solve a 20 year
old problem of using optics to make connections within and between electronic
chips reliably. Finally, Prof. Nishi’s work on III-V FET on Silicon for High
Performance Digital Logic is closely aligned with my research interest due to
my current understanding of the importance of III-V materials in future
electronics revolution. In summary, I am very inspired by the research on novel
electronic devices for advanced functionalities by Stanford. I am excited that
if I get into the program I would have the opportunity to contribute to both
“More Moore” and “More than Moore” approach to nanoelectronics scaling and can
be a part of the legacy of Stanford’s research on electronics.
Last but not the least; I have
always groomed myself having a diverse cultural background. I was in the drama
team that performed in the Electrical Day of 2006 & 2007, the largest
cultural event of the department of EEE in BUET. After going through the rigor
of different activities, I refresh my mind through music by playing violin in
my leisure time and through photography. Two of my photos have been exhibited
in the 3rd Friendship Art Exhibition held in the National Art Gallery, Dhaka.
Finally, I believe that being an academician in a reputed research university
will serve my ultimate career dream where I could be working towards the
benefit of the society through my research. Technology should always be
directed to the betterment of mankind. It is the duty of the leaders in
research to lead their projects in such a way as to have an impact not only on
mankind but also on policy making issues so that the society’s greater interest
is served. I have the dream to become a leader in my research field and I
strongly believe that I have the potential. The opportunity to pursue my
graduate study in the EE dept. of Stanford University will act as the inception
of my dream towards a successful future.
